Windows Server 2022 support began on August 18, 2021, and starting August 20, 2021, customers can buy the new Windows Server 2022 through Microsoft’s Volume Licensing Service Center. It has three variants, Standard, Datacenter, and Datacenter: Azure Edition. This release is a Long Term Servicing Channel (LTSC) release, which means companies can get 10 years of support, 5 years of mainstream support, and 5 years of extended support

Windows Server 2022 Functionalities

Microsoft Windows Server 2022 is a line of server operating systems. According to Microsoft, Windows Server 2022 has many new features, Windows Server 2022 users can expect the following new features:

Advanced multi-layer security.

Secure Core Server and Attack Protection to protect data and information. ‘Secure-core servers’ are built on 3 pillars: Simple Security, Advanced Security, and Preemptive Defense.

Secure connectivity, Windows Server 2022 uses TLS 1.3, which is the latest and most widely used security protocol. TLS 1.3 encrypts data to ensure secure communication between two points.

Azure hybrid ability makes it easier to extend your data centers to Azure.

Improved Windows Admin Center.

Nested virtualization for AMD processors.

Requirements

RAM: 512 MB minimum

Network adapter: Ethernet (pumping at least 1 gigabit per second)

Processor: 1.4 GHz 64-bit minimum

Disk space requirements: 32GB data minimum

Other:

Secure Boot-supported firmware and UEFI 2.3.1c-based system

Super VGA (1024 x 768) minimum and capable monitor for graphics device

Trusted Platform Module (TPM) to get special features

Windows Server 2022 Secure Core Server

Secure-Core Server consists of three pillars:

Simple security, Windows Server 2022 is easy to configure through Windows Admin Center, here you can easily enable security features like Secure Core Server.

Advanced security and Secure-Core Server use hardware, firmware, and operating system capability to protect the system from current and future threats. This is done through hardware root-of-trust, firmware security, and virtualization-based security (VBS).

The preemptive defense also proactively defends against attackers trying to attack or disrupt the secure-core system.

Windows Server 2022 Editions: Standard, Datacenter, and Datacenter: Azure Edition

Microsoft Windows Server 2022 Standard Edition

The Standard edition of Microsoft Windows Server 2022 is the base package of the three. Many features are available, but some are missing such as the Storage Replica option, Storage Spaces Direct, and Host Guardian Hyper-V support. It also lacks hot patching (applying updates without rebooting all systems) and software-defined networking. With the standard Windows Server 2022 license you get the possibility to run 2 virtual machines, with one Hyper-V host per license. The Standard edition includes the core functions that are discussed in the functionality section, such as secure-core servers and the new TLS.

Microsoft Windows Server 2022 Datacenter Edition

The Datacenter edition of Microsoft Windows Server 2022 is a step up from the Standard edition. This edition of MS Windows Server 2022 includes software-defined networking. The Datacenter edition also offers unlimited storage replication and also comes with the Storage Spaces Direct feature. Hot patching is not included with the Datacenter edition. The Datacenter edition is also a big step up in the number of virtual machines, as the Datacenter edition offers unlimited virtual machines, and one Hyper-V host per license, just like the Standard edition.

Microsoft Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition

Windows Server 2022 Datacenter: Azure Edition is the largest edition of the three. For example, the Azure version offers SMB over QUIC, hot patching, and extended networking. Windows Admin Center is also supplemented with the following Azure menus:

Azure Hybrid Center

Azure Kubernetes Services

Azure Backup

Azure File Sync

Azure Monitor

Azure Security Center

Windows Server 2022 vs 2019: Detailed Description

The table above lists some of the key features of the new Windows Server version vs the 2019 version. Below are some of the differences and their utility.

Azure Arc: Azure Arc provides control over a wide range of resources across Azure, multi-cloud, and on-premises. It can be seen as a bridge connecting everything within your company.

Storage Migration Service: Storage Migration Service makes it easy to migrate data to Windows Server or Azure. Storage Migration Service comes with a tool that lists the data on your system and can then move it to the server. Both Windows Server 2019 and 2022 support the Storage Migration Service, however, with MS Windows Server 2022, it has been improved and is easier to use.

TLS: TLS stands for Transport Layer Security. It ensures that the data sent is encrypted.

Windows Admin Center: This application is used to manage Windows servers, clusters, hyper-converged infrastructure, and Windows 10 computers. This management tool can be found on both Microsoft Windows Server 2019 and Microsoft Windows Server 2022.

Automatic Updates for Windows Admin Center: Microsoft Windows Server 2022 supports automatic updates for Windows Admin Center, with Windows Server 2019 this must be done manually.

Nested Virtualization: Nested virtualization makes it possible to run a virtual machine within another virtual machine. This makes it possible to create your virtualization environment. It also allows you to allow multiple guests on 1 system at the same time.

Secure-Core Servers: Secure-Core servers are possible on Windows Server 2022, it’s easy to enable them. Windows Server 2019 doesn’t have this feature.

DNS-over-HTTPS (DoH): DNS-over-HTTPS is enabled on Windows Server 2022.

New Partitioning Tool: The new Partitioning Tool allows other virtual machines to use some graphics cards with partially nested virtualization, this makes it possible to boost performance for some users.
