Growing awareness regarding rainwater harvesting systems in developing sectors Rising water scarcity across the nation are driving the market of rainwater harvesting market in India.

According to TechSci Research report, India Rainwater Harvesting Market – By Region, Competition, Forecast & Opportunities, 2028, the India Rainwater Harvesting Market would expand during the forecast period owing to the development of smart cities and green buildings. With the aim of creating infrastructure that is sustainable and environment-friendly, the Government of India (GoI) has set up programs to create smart cities in India. The smart city needs smart buildings with eco-friendly features such as rainwater collecting.

Groundwater recharge is a technology used to replenish groundwater resources that is now the focus of the sellers in this industry. This procedure allows rainwater to move downward from the ground surface to groundwater reserves in order to restore them and stock them for later use. It does this by using recharge pits, recharge trenches, tube wells, and recharge wells to transport accumulated or reclaimed rainwater to the subsurface. One of the major factors driving the expansion of the rainwater harvesting market size, according to this market study, is the rising usage of rainwater collection for groundwater recharging.

The necessity for sustainable water solutions and the implementation of efficient green waste management strategies is driving the growth of the water and wastewater management sector, according to India’s Rainwater Harvesting market forecast. Both market and competitive study also enables clients to comprehend how India’s rainwater harvesting market affects the energy sector.

Based on the type, the market is segmented into a rain barrel system, wet system, dry system, and green roof system. Rain barrel system is expected to lead the market in the upcoming year because it aids in lowering the amount of storm runoff. When it rains, runoff collects toxins from hard surfaces and landscapes, including soil, fertiliser, oil, pesticides, and more. Moreover, it promotes the health of plants and soil, saves money, and conserves water, among other benefits.

Based on the harvesting method, the market is segmented into above-ground harvesting method and under-ground harvesting method. Above-ground harvesting method is expected to grow during the forecast period owing to the fact that roof-mounted tanks are often less expensive and simpler to install than underground systems. Additionally, those who don’t own the property on which they reside can relocate the tank (flexible location).

Based on application, the market is segmented into industrial, residential, agricultural, and commercial. The agricultural segment leads the market and is expected to maintain a healthy CAGR during the forecast period. Rainwater collection is extremely advantageous in this industry since farmers use it all across the nation for the growth of their crops. It makes it simpler for a farmer to irrigate crops and farmland. On the lack of groundwater, crops are also harvested in the fields using rainwater collection.

The deadline for installing rainwater harvesting (RWH) systems in plots larger than 100 square meters in the city was extended by the Delhi government on October 11, 2022, to March 31, 2023. This decision was made due to insufficient compliance rates and the need to raise awareness, among other reasons.

Numerous individuals in the capital are anticipated to receive relief from the judgement. In this meeting, the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) made the decision to educate the Delhi population more about the advantages of a rainwater collecting system. According to a government official, the government has currently made this choice in light of the challenges customers are currently having installing rainwater collecting systems.

Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) systems were installed  in 2012, and the failure to comply carries a fine equal to 1.5 times the water bill for the plot. However, under rule 50 of the Delhi Water and Sewer (Tariff and Metering) Regulations, 2012, a 10% discount is offered on the water bill if such a system is implemented by the property owner.

In 2019, the Delhi Jal Board also made the decision to require the installation of a RWH structure in order to secure new water connection for properties larger than 100 square meters.

Buildings constructed after the deadline of July 28, 2001, were required to install RWH systems by March 31, 2020, but older homes had an additional year to comply. After RWAs and citizen organizations convened and asked the government for extra time, the deadline was extended by six months. The Covid pandemic was then used as justification by the Delhi government to prolong the deadlines in 2020 and 2021.

India’s Capital i.e New Delhi also has a capacity to collect 917 million cubic metres of rainwater, which would be used to replenish the city’s diminishing groundwater levels. Delhi receives an average of 774 millimetres of rainfall annually. But only a small percentage of people follow these regulations for rainwater collection. From July 1, 2017, to the present, just 2,430 consumers have taken advantage of the 10% discount for installing a RWH system, according to Delhi Jal Board (DJB) data.

“The rising consumer awareness regarding the declining freshwater amount across geographies is one of the factors driving the growth of the India rainwater collecting system market. One of the main reasons driving the expansion of the India rainwater harvesting system market is the rising demand for rainwater collecting systems from farmers and large farms. The rising need for water for irrigation, which is essential for maintaining crop productivity and combating climatic disasters such as drought, is the cause of this rise in agriculturalists’ demand. As a result, they now have a reliable solution for collecting rainwater and storing it for future use. Therefore, the market of Rainwater Harvesting in India is expected to grow in the upcoming years,” said Mr Karan Chechi, Research Director with TechSci Research, a research-based global management consulting firm.
